Computer Bookshops® (CBL), the UK's premier computer book
wholesaler/distributor, was founded by Ian & Margaret
Maclean in 1978. As the computer market grew and with the
arrival of the IBM PC, the company expanded rapidly, constantly
discovering new opportunities for growth in this evolving
technological world.
By occupying a commanding
position in the UK book market, we have built strong
relationships with all of the leading publishers. Some of these
have entrusted us as their sole supplier in the UK, an honour
that we take very seriously.
For over 30 years, we have seen huge changes in the way people work and use computers to
run their lives. In keeping with this, 1995 saw the evolution of
our unique merchandising system by utilising portable computers,
giving our representatives access to national shelf sales
information for every product and every customer, and fully
automating the ordering process.
The Computer Book Industry
Since the mass adoption of the home PC, CBL and its partners have consolidated their
position in the consumer computer book market by consistently
expanding and adapting to support the needs of the PC user.
Originally catering for the needs of a small number of early computer programmers,
during the last 30 years Computer Bookshops® have
witnessed the dramatic growth of the computer book industry,
during which computing technology has infiltrated all aspects of modern life.
Throughout the 90s and now at the beginning of the 21st Century, we have capitalised on the
explosion in popularity of new growth areas that revolve around
the evolution of the home PC into a centralised digital hub,
including areas as diverse as gaming and home entertainment,
digital imaging and more recently, Wi-Fi technology.
These influences, as well as the continued popularity of the internet and the rapid
expansion of new technologies such as broadband, represent
numerous opportunities for both the enthusiastic home consumer
and in the workplace, where the computer has long been regarded
as an indispensable business tool.
As these areas of interest continue to grow and diversify Computer Bookshops®
will remain at the forefront of computer publishing
distribution, working closely with its customers and publishers
to build on the success these exciting opportunities present.
